What is a puck rake?

  • A puck rake is a small tool with thin, metallic needles that you can insert into the coffee grounds to stir and distribute them evenly before tamping the puck. It's also known as the "Weiss Distribution Technique (WDT)".

  • Why is a puck rake so important?

  • Coffee grounds tend to clump together due to static. This can lead to uneven extraction and result in watery or bitter shots. By breaking apart the clumps with a puck rake, water can flow evenly through the coffee bed, maximizing the flavors.

  • How do I use the puck rake?

  • Insert the puck rake's needles deeply and vertically into the coffee in your portafilter basket. Move the needles in large circular motions, making sure all the surfaces get covered. Then slowly lift the needles up and make more shallow circles. When you're finished, make sure the surface of the coffee bed looks even and give the portafilter a gentle tap before you tamp.

  • We recommend pairing the puck rake with our Decent Portafilter Funnel so the coffee grounds don't spill over. And our calibrated Decent Tamper offers self-leveling with calibrated pressure to guarantee a flat and level tamp after you finish stirring.
